I decided to do my speech on my tennis racket because of the following:
First, racket is proof of my willpower. I was sure that I wanted to learn how to play tennis and I was even more sure that I was going to learn how to play tennis. Willpower was essential to following through on my goal.
Second, my racket is proof of my strength -not physical, but mental and emotional. I knew I needed the strength to fight through my numerous insecurities. My insecurity of never having been a good at sports, my insecurity of how my socioeconomic status played a role in my access to the sport of tennis or lack thereof, and my insecurity of the fact that I was the oldest student in the tennis clinic b at least 5 years and everyone of those little kids knew what they were doing, whereas I did not.
Out of all the things that I learned through this journey of becoming an avid tennis athlete, perhaps the most important is that it's not what you hold in your hand that makes the player, rather it's what you hold in your chest (your heart) that makes the athlete (insert cheesy "aaaw" sound). First, a bow has a decorative purpose. It enhances and adds something extra. I'm a really decorative person. I like to take something plain and make it sparkle, by adding my own touches, going over the top, and making it fun and exciting. I also go the extra mile when it comes to my work ethic.
A bow also has a youthful connotation, something little girls wear in their hair. I am a young spirit, love working with kids, having fun, and exploring new things.
Bagelworks Cafe represents me for three very important reasons:
First, the diversity in the menu is a representation of the diversity in my life. The uncommon blend of Chinese and Spanish cultures has allowed me to dabble in a diverse amount of foods, traditions, and customs.
Second, Bagelworks' changing atmosphere yet concentration on using their core values as a foundation is something I can also relate to. I have embraced change over the year and believe that my values have kept me true to myself.
Third is the most important shared characteristic. The devotion to being a family run and family oriented cafe is a priority to this business. Family is my priority and I constantly revolve my life around them.
Bagelworks Cafe is a place where I have grown up and been extremely involved with. I believe that many of personal values and lessons have been uprooted from what I would call my second home.
Bagelworks is located in Santa Monica on Wilshire and Bundy just off the 405! COME VISIT :)
I chose an Irish Dance shoe to represent me because I have been dancing most of my life. I feel that the surprising loudness of the shoe is also a characteristic I share. Once people get to know me they are often surprised by how talkative and energetic I am. I also believe that I share the flexible nature of the shoe. I am the kind of person who likes to go with the flow and avoid drama as best as I can. The third characteristic I think I share with the shoe is my loyalty, I would like to think of myself as the kind of friend who will do whatever I can when a friend is in need.
I chose to bring a fry pan. I am entrepreneur even when I cook. I perceive shortage of food as an opportunity to get creative and have created recipes like the crepeadilla. Just like the friends I have that support me in failure, my roommate's friends eat anything I make, encouraging me to continue cooking random food. Finally, the fry pan represents my love for Food Network. Like the food I cook with the fry pan, I am unique and made of many different qualities.
I chose to bring in a party popper to represent myself. I talked about three qualities that I share with a party popper. First, I have a hard outer shell, similar to the plastic non-transparent outside of a party popper. I talked about how I can be very shy and reserved until you get to know me. Next, I compared my adventurous and spontaneous personality to the shock and surprise that comes once someone pops a popper. I mentioned that my personality often does not match the impression that I first give. Lastly I compared the exciting nature of a party popper which is used for celebration to my matching fun character.
I chose Manhattan Beach to represent me. It is the perfect spot because it mixes activities with relaxation. I love listening to music on the beach or playing a games with my friends. Further, the 8 mile strand that connects Redondo Beach with Santa Monica is ideal for biking, exploring and being outdoors. I love the sunshine and Manhattan Beach is the best spot to soak up some rays.
I brought in a rock and showed how it represented myself. Like a rock I too have gone through the rock cycle. At first I was a sediment, then apart of a landform, broke away due to erosion, went through heat and pressure, then ended up the rock I am today. Like a rock, no mater what I go through in life, I will never break.
My perfect day is spent in downtown Santa Monica shopping on Third Street, beach bag on shoulder, listening to the street performers outside and an afternoon spent beach side, catching rays, people watching, and just plain relaxing. One reason why the downtown Santa Monica area is so meaningful to me is because it shares my sunny disposition towards life. Furthermore since Santa Monica provides visitors so many diverse venues of entertainment and amusement, it allows me to engage in the different sides of my personality. In an image driven Los Angeles, downtown Santa Monica is one place where I can be myself, be imperfect, and be fulfilled participating in a variety of activities which all feed my happiness in different ways. Santa Monica allows me to relax, to enjoy, yet to remain busy all at once. It is also a site of my fondest memories and a place I look forward to exploring even more.
I chose Canter's Deli as the place that best represents me. It has a strong sense of culture and family, and it's open 24/7 - filled with comforting foods and staff. Similarly, I've been raised to value family and my Jewish culture, including jewish foods which Canter's sells. I also see myself as a very loyal, warm, and comforting friend.
I chose a planner to represent me. A planner is organized, goal-oriented, and small, but able to fit a lot if information in it. Like the planner, I am extremely organized and live by my planner. I am a very goal oriented person and need to always work towards something like a reward. Lastly, I am pocket sized like a planner, but full of big ideas and a big personality!
I chose to do my presentation on my nail polish collection, for the ways in which it represents me artistically and creatively. I have always had a passion for nail polish, and have always gotten into the different color schemes and creations that I can make through blending the colors. Since I talk a lot with my hands, I feel that clean, manicured nails is an important aspect with appearance. I feel that everybody expresses themselves through different means, and nail polish is what I feel expresses me in a unique way.
The Kodak Theatre in Hollywood shares many qualities that I would also use to describe myself. It has become an essential part of Los Angeles, which is important because I have lived in Los Angeles all my life. It is also the entertainment capital of the world, which shares my own obsession with all forms of entertainment: music, film, fashion, television, and general popular culture. From the outside, the Kodak Theatre is fairly simple in its architectural style and coloring. It's square, and painted in neutral colors, and if it weren't for its size and the sign that signifies it as the Kodak Theatre, people would probably walk right past it. I consider myself fairly simple on the outside as well; I enjoy wearing simple, neutral palettes in my wardrobe and am more apt to blend in with crowd than stand out. Every once in a while, however, the Kodak Theatre will become decked out in fancy draping for special occasions, such as the Academy Awards-- even a simple girl such as myself can appreciate dressing up every once in a while. As simple as the Kodak Theatre can look on the outside, once someone goes inside (a rare opportunity that can really only be taken if you're famous or watching on television), he or she can see that the inside is nothing at all like the outside: the interior is full of crystal and chandeliers and gold plates, so intricate and elaborate and full of old Hollywood glamour and drama. To know me like the inside of the Kodak Theatre can too be difficult unless you are a designated "chosen one," as I am extremely private and would rather keep personal matters to myself, but those who do get to know me also know that I am nothing like what I seem on the outside. I may look plain and low-key, but on the inside I am full of personality and drama and am always bursting with emotion. It helps me live by the saying that a book should never be judged by its cover.
I choose a mosaic to represent me. A mosaic is an assortment of many different textiles, glasses, and colors to create one image. I related the different textiles, pieces of glass, and colors to how I am a mix of a lot of things racially, culturally and overall in regards to my opinions and beliefs. I also talked about my out of the ordinary upbringing and how that has shaped me into a very open person. The "most" mosaic-like aspect that I possess however is my involvement in the International Youth Council. Being involved in this has allowed me to have the unique opportunity to meet with many different people from all around the world. A mosaic is a unique one of a kind design and I feel I am too!
I picked the LA Fashion District as the best place to describe me for this assignment.
As we all know, most college students live on a tight budget including myself. Thus, I am always on the lookout for the best deals in town. Located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, the Fashion District has everything that you can think of. It amazes me how one area is the ultimate place to find the cheapest and best deals in the nation and in the other street corner, find the most sought-after high-end designer name brand showrooms. My friends and I actually always look forward to our next fashion district adventures. We typically spend the whole day roaming around and find ourselves having gotten the best deals at the end of the day. Being all into fashion, discovering the best deals is already an achievement for me.
Also, I’ve always dreamt of working in the fashion industry someday ever since I was younger. I remember reading through fashion magazines when I was about 9 years old and telling myself that I would someday be the next Anna Wintour of Vogue magazine. Well, only a bit has changed. Although I am not pursuing to be a big-time magazine editor anymore, I am planning on becoming a successful fashion publicist or a hotshot fashion-advertising executive. The fashion district is home for plenty of style houses, showrooms and fashion public relations offices. Just by being there and picturing myself working in their chic offices inspires me to work even harder and accomplish my goals someday.
The fashion industry is where I aspire to work in and flourish in the future. I am blessed that I’ve been given wonderful opportunities to pursue what I am truly interested. For the time being, I am going to find myself continuously getting lost in and being amused by the certain charm that the LA Fashion District brings. I am going to use the inspiration it gives me as my motivation to attain my future plans. For now, all I can do is dream and hopefully make it happen. :)
I chose a paintbrush to represent me in my speech. A paintbrush is one of the most important tools an artist can use in his paintings. It essentially connects the artist and their imagination to a blank white canvas, encouraging the paintbrush to translate these ideas and vivid images. Depending upon the brush they select, different stylistic effects and/or meanings can emerge from the painting. I am a very creative person, yet I know that everything I attempt to create won't always be applauded or received with positivity. Despite this, I know I am capable of creating beautiful things within my life if I just follow my own "brush strokes" and let that take me where I want to go in life. I can create my own masterpiece, for as long as I embrace what makes me special as a person. A paintbrush is representative of my unique individuality and how it can help me paint my own dreams and work to make them a reality.
I also chose a fry pan because of its non-stick Teflon surface and its square-like shape, as opposed to conventional round ones.
My personality can be described to be coated with Teflon because nothing really sticks. By that, I mean that when I am faced with negativity, anger or sadness, I am quick to get over it. I may let things simmer, but I generally don't dwell on things for very long.
The square aspect of my personality relates to my structured and organized nature. I like to keep a Moleskine and record all my thoughts or plan out my schedule in structured calendar forms. All my design projects seem to feature defined angles and straight-edged shapes rather than more fluid figures as well.
It isn't always good to brush things off so easily or be overly structured, and it is in these ways that this particular frying pan, with a history of some crazy food stains and its rounded corners, exemplifies me.
I am warm and cozy. I give good hugs, my friends come to me with their problems seeking advice, I am hospitable and comforting like a sweater.
I can be formal OR silly. I did speech and debate in high school, meaning I dressed up in a suit every weekend to compete against other kids in my event which was HUMOR (silly), and I was very successful in humor, so hopefully this is indicative of the fact that I am a GOOD silly sweater, as opposed to a TACKY one.
Old people like me. Old people like sweaters because they are warm and they make their grandchildren look like miniature grownups- it's like playing with dolls for the elderly. Old people also like me, because my hobbies and interests appeal to their sense of calm or "sophistication." I enjoy tennis, going to the theater, being in the theater, playing piano, fine dining, and intellectual discussion. And board games. I have a favorite cheese. When I was 5 years old, I sent back eel at a sushi restaurant because they brought out the salt-water fried eel instead of the fresh-water grilled eel. I happened to be out with my grandfather at the time, and I think I earned his love that day.
Sweaters are warm, formal but light hearted, sophisticated but fun. They are approachable, flexible, and comforting, and these attributes are the ones I hope to have as well.
btw, this is my favorite beach. it doesn't represent me, but it's from the gold coast off ?Brisbane in Australia.

ReplyDeleteI chose Venice beach to represent me. It is my favorite spot to drive to and relax in all of LA because it has both an amazing beach and a vibrant culture. The three things that stand out the most to me about Venice as qualities I also posses are its cultural diversity, the unique art and art appreciation that is found there, as well as its undeniable free spirit. Venice is home to the most eclectic group of people, and attracts tourism from all over the country. There is nothing more interesting than sitting at the sidewalk cafĂ© and people watching down the boardwalk. Much in that same way, I too come from a very diverse and cultural background. I was born in Armenia, grew up in Russia, and did not move to LA till I was nine. Also, Venice is a very unique place for art and artists. From the beautiful murals on the sides of buildings to the artists and musicians on the boardwalk, it is the perfect place to go for a lover of local art. I too am have a great appreciation for art, and know that no matter what I do with in my life, the arts have to be intricately involved in it. The thing that most distinguishes Venice is the amazing free spirit all of the people, as well as the town itself posses. Perhaps it is most noticeable on Sunday afternoons when locals gather on the beach and dance in a drum circle watching the sunset. I too like to think that I posses a free spirit, and “march to the tune of my own drum.”
