Martin Luther King, Jr. - I have a dream speech
Martin Luther King, Jr. - I have a dream speech
Please provide some feedback on your thoughts about MLK's speech, which we saw in class but did not have time to discuss.
Please consider
a) why this speech has become so famous
b) what you noticed about this delivery that was expected or unexpected?
c) what you noticed about the content of his speech (expected or unexpected)?
Context:
King delivered this speech in the middle of the Civil Rights movement on August 28, 1963. This speech was delivered as part of the famous March on Washington, in front of more than 200,000 people who had come to DC from all over the country in the hopes of using non-violent protest as a way to secure civil rights.
Check out how they have outlined the speech here

communication apprehension: getting over it on the first speech
Communication apprehension (as covered in chapter one) is your fear about talking to other people about things - and is often most manifest in public speaking situations. More people are scared of speaking than they are dying!
In that light, just how bad was it? Take for a moment to tell me how you felt in the spotlight (and for some of you, on camera!) - I won't give you your grade until you tell me what things you think you did and were aware of - which is especially important since we didn't have the dvd for the first half.
go for it. and if you start out saying you looked fat like i did, that doesn't count.

My favorite song....
Speaking exercise: We're going to devote 1-2 minutes to you playing your favorite song (or a song) for us - tell us why you love the song, and what it means to you. Try to use some of the principles we've been using in class - telling stories, using clear language, speaking in a conversational style. No notecards, just share with us.
Please paste the link to the youtube video or the way to get the song online so we can hear it in class tomorrow.

State of the Union
Hi!
State of the Union extra credit!
Pick a portion of the State of the Union - an issue, an example, etc. Write about the example, and say whether it was effective or not.
Rule: if more than two people have commented on the issue, you have to pick a new issue.

Your thoughts on the Arizona Shooting Speeches
So in class we watched President Obama's speech about the tragedy, and part of Sarah Palin's speech (you can watch the last two minutes on your own). I also assigned the link about some of the political rhetoric in Palin's speech.
Write about 200-250 words comparing the two speeches - talk about the style of the two speakers, their substance, and their delivery. Talk about how you felt as an audience member. Think about what we talked about in class as far as speaker credibility... Pick out some specific details in the speeches to talk about!!
You can post your comments underneath this post in the comments section. You may have to register with blogger.
